Somewhere & LIT.

I was bored and decided to list some of the similarities (w/ screencaps) of the two movies just for fun. Any others you noticed?

Of course, some of this is guessing because the film's not out yet. Disclaimer: I'm not knocking the film at all. Quite the opposite. I'm really excited about it! I just love pointing out similarities between films. :)

Random models in hotel / random Japanese rock stars in hotel.

Girl looking out window of car.

Man looking bored in bed.

Swimming pool scene.

Man feeling ridiculous doing something required of an actor.

Scene when the girl gets mad at the guy (maybe?)/chilly meal scene.

Two main characters lounging around.

Random chick that main character sleeps with (?)

Two main characters in bed, eating/drinking, while watching TV.

Guy not excited about pole-dancing women in room / guy not excited about prostitute in room (strippers also features in a Japanese strip club in LIT...though there's no pole; there is a pole in Sofia's White Stripes video with Kate Moss, though!)

Guy surrounded by silliness of a foreign awards show; guy surrounded by silliness of a foreign talk show; guy surrounded by silliness of a strip club.

Guy watches girl skate / guy watches girl sing.

Two characters bonding in car.

Two characters playing Guitar Hero / Two characters doing karaoke.

Having fun running through hotel.

Escaping together into taxi / escaping together into taxi.
Nerdy side note: all the characters in Somewhere apparently wear Persol sunglasses, just like in LIT!.

Guy walks away as girl falls asleep.

Girl leans head on shoulder.

Guy talking to ex on phone / guy talking to distant wife.

Extra:

Cityscape with title / cityscape with title on DVD menu and cityscape with title in the trailer.

You're amazing

Think you've got it covered! But sure there will be many more when we see the film wahoooo...

One geeky thing I noticed (not related to LIT except that Scarlett was basically dressed as Sofia) is that right at the beginning of the trailer Cleo/Elle is wearing the same Hermes Double Tour watch in white that Sofia used to wear.

Re: You're amazing

Ooh, yes, good eye! I saw that, too, but I was like, "Hm...maybe it isn't. Why would someone so young wear such an expensive watch?" Yeah, I forgot it was an SC movie, LOL.

I'm looking forward to this film, too. I actually don't mind the similarities; in fact, they excite me. People could say the same about Quentin Tarantino and other directors. :)

Agreed. But they probably won't because folks love trashing Sofia.

I keep reading about the similarities between LIT and Somewhere. Yes, there's probably some similar themes and motifs between both films. Yet, that would shortchange in what Sofia could be doing with the film. I think she's got a much more broader idea for this film.

I doubt it will top LIT (which is my favorite film... ever) but the trailer definitely intrigued me. Plus, I think it's going to be something entirely different while it will connect to all of Sofia's other films.

Again, I will definitely be in line to see this opening night.

I agree. :) This post is just based on the trailer alone, and of course there are lots of amazing things in the film we haven't even seen yet.

I think the film will be similar, but there will be something extra special to it that makes it different from the others.

No special program. Just plain screen capture! Are you on a Mac or PC? I can point out some nice free programs.

Very well spotted! Although there is one that I noticed that you may have noticed and purposely not included as it is not actually in the films, but specifically the trailers. At the end of the trailers for both films, where is says the title of the film and "written and directed by Sofia Coppola", they both have shots of late night cities. Being it Tokyo for LiT and L.A for Somewhere. Just saying :)

I tried to stick to the films, but yes, great catch! :) I thought about the DVD menu for LIT when I saw the end of the Somewhere trailer.

Great point. :) I wonder if Somewhere will end in a departure, too? Sofia always uses the best music for ending scenes.

That is a very good assessment. We'll have to wait and see. I'm very excited now to go see this and I really want to go on a plane to Venice and catch the premiere just to see the film. Sofia has never let me down. I like all of her work. I don't care what people said about "Marie Antoinette". That was a very misunderstood film. Just because she decided to break a few cliches of the bio-pic and go for a more character-driven film doesn't mean it's a bad movie. Though it wasn't perfect and (me, being a history buff) didn't have a strong historical context. I enjoyed it. I hope she puts "Lick the Stars" on a DVD release of one of her films.

That had a departure of sorts as well. The last shot had a character leave the clique to forge her own identity while another tried to kill herself. All of Sofia have themes that are truly relevant to people and I will definitely await for "Somewhere" to come out along with the soundtrack.

Here's a mashup of LIT & Somewhere entitled "Somewhere in Translation" (I think):
